This weekend, John John Florence met his match for the second time in the Western Australia Margaret River Pro finals. There, he faced off against Jack Robinson in a wild heat that echoed the 2022 Margaret River final, with Robinson winning both times. While the matchup was an impressive display of aquatic acrobatics, it wasn’t actually the venue for JJF’s best wave of the event. That would be the perfect 10 he earned in a semifinal heat against Australian George Pittar.
It bears noting that Pittar’s been on a bit of a heater, lately. His loss against Ethan Ewing in the round of 32 at Bells was so well surfed that many WSL viewers took to the comments to claim that Pittar should have been the one to advance. Whether or not he was robbed, it sure earned him a lot of fans. Pittar’s star is on the rise.
However, today we’re talking about Florence, and the ridiculous ride that landed him the highest scoring wave of the event. It started off with a hard bottom turn into a ridiculous hack that had announcers almost at a loss for words. He hit the lip, blew the tail, rotated 180 degrees and went into such a deep layback that it seemed like he fell off the board. However, John John being John John, he somehow recovered and proceeded to pull off two more turns, just to show off a bit.
If that’s not a 10-point turn, I don’t know what is.
