If you’re Australian, you probably like to drink. If you’re an Australian in Hawaii, you probably like to drink Mai Tais. You probably also like to surf. Surfing and dangerously strong rum drinks – seems like a bad idea? More like an awesome afternoon.
Who other than The Mad Hueys would come up with this legendary combination. At Turtle Bay resort, the North Shore’s premier luxury hotel, they recently held the 2015 Mai Tai Challenge. And it’s basically what you’d expect – chugging the colorful nectar and then paddling out at the mushy righthander on the hotel’s property.
The “final” of the super serious contest came down to Dean Morrison and Joel Parkinson, lifelong mates from the Goldie. It’s not the highest calibre surfing you’ve ever seen these two do, but can you blame ’em? They’re having more fun than anything. After Dingo was crowned victorious, they swapped the champagne shower celebration for one with Mai Tais, appropriately so.
