It seems like every day there’s an announcement of a new chlorinated wave being developed. On the other hand, actual finished facilities are fewer and farther between. One project that actually has come to fruition is the São Paulo Surf Club, and YouTuber Jacob Szekely recently got a chance to put it through its paces.
The pool was first announced a year ago, when Brazilian real estate development company JHSF announced it had licensed American Wave Machines’ PerfectSwell technology for a new wave pool. The companies had previously partnered to create the Boa Vista Village development, a luxury gated community centered around a huge AWM-powered pool. Now, it seems like it’s fully up and operational, as they are inviting freesurfers and YouTubers to take a run at their wave.
“This place is insane,” crowed Szekely after a few hours in the tank. “The boys are trading off getting barreled in the middle of Brazil, in the heart of São Paulo. Every 10 minutes we just switch – ‘Oh yeah, let’s hit the biggest air section of all time and go 12 feet in the air’ and then ‘Oh, no, we feel like getting barreled now.’”
