The Inertia

Surfing is most often associated with sun-drenched strike missions to tropical locations, but that’s not all there is to it. This weekend, the French city of Anglet played host to a unique surfing competition designed for the vampire set: The Surf De Nuit Anglet. The 30th edition of the annual specialty event took place Friday evening in two-foot surf, where two surfers were crowned champions in the dark of night on LED-illuminated boards.

The Surf De Nuit Anglet has six mixed teams of two surfers each, vying for victory in a competition field marked by giant glowing balloons. This year, the winners were Tyea Zebrowski and Lukas Skinner from Team Rip Curl, who donated their prize money to Handi Surf, an adaptive surfing organization launched in 2012. “It’s my first time at this event, and my first time ever surfing at night,” said Skinner. “It was a really cool experience with all the lights and it was so fun to surf with all these incredible people and teaming up with Tya, thanks to everyone who made this happen.”
