In the world of shaping surfboards, it takes a lot to stand out. Of the millions of shapers around the world, there are only a handful of names that have stood the test of time. And at the top of that heap sits Bob McTavish. He first began carving his works of art out of foam chunks back in 1962, and since then has become one of the best and most sought after shapers on earth.
Known especially for his longboards, he got together with two-time world longboard champ Kelia Moniz to walk her through his shaping bay and the entire process of making something beautiful. Sit back, watch, learn, and like Kelia says, “don’t mess with the guru.” Oh, and if you’re interested, here’s the glassing process—an art in itself.
