The Inertia

Oahu’s Sandy Beach shorebreak is on a short list of the world’s most…let’s just say entertaining places. The main reef break itself can get really fun on its best days — like almost any other notable wave on that island — but the real attraction for many is the shorebreak. Especially in a surf world growing increasingly fascinated with hucking it into angry, closeout barrels that break over nearly dry sand.

Places like this used to be for playful bodysurfing and boogie boards only, but that’s not really the case anymore, and Sandy’s is no exception. While the North Shore has been pretty quiet through the early parts of this new season, a recent swell turned Sandy Beach on and Tyler Stanaland, Eric Koston, Kalani Robb, Travis Watanabe, Kekoa Cazimero, and Blair Conklin (and some rando with a foil and a death wish) grabbed soft tops, fins, hand planes and chucked themselves into the famous shorebreak. The resulting footage is more or less 11 minutes of exactly what you’d expect: chaos with a handful of “ooohs” and “ahhhhs” from the peanut gallery.
