Waimea Bay

What better way to welcome winter than this? Photo: YouTube//Screenshot

The Inertia

It’s winter on the North Shore and it’s been good to surfers thus far. Like, really good. Swell after swell after swell pounded the Seven Mile Miracle, lighting up Pipeline with back-to-back-to-back epic days. Jamie O’Brien and Mike Stewart shared a stunning tube. Everyone in the lineup scored for Pipe’s opening day. And on November 29, Waimea Bay decided to show up to the party.

“November 29, 2024 (was) the opening of big wave surfing season on the island of Oahu,” reads the description of the video below on the Oahu Surf Films YouTube page.

Waimea Bay, as you know, is the place for one of the world’s most prestigious surf contests. The window for the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational opens on December 14 and runs through March 13. It’s always one of the best events to watch — not just for the waves, although the waves are stunning — but for the rich history that comes along with it. Fingers crossed it gets big enough for the bay to call the day this year!
