As you are reading this (if you’re reading this in the daylight hours of Sept 6th-9th, that is) the Surf Ranch Pro at Kelly Slater’s weird, futuristic wonderland is happening. The world is watching because it’s a very strange thing to have a surf contest in the middle of cow country. It’s great for other competing wave makers, like American Wave Machines, and they’re hitching onto the Surf Ranch Pro wagon and flying their flags high. “Look at us too!” they shout, waving those flags. Remember when Kelly Slater introduced the world to his watery chocolate factory on the back of poor Adriano de Souza’s world championship? It seemed like kind of a jerk move, but hey, that’s business. And now every time anything happens around Kelly’s wave, you can bet that NLand or BSR is going to have an edit ready to ride that SEO train all the way to the bank.
You may remember when Wavegarden first showed up on the scene. They promised big things: 6-foot waves and tubes, to name a few. When neither of those things proved to be available, the surfing public was outraged, as though we were owed something. “It’s not perfect enough!” we shouted. “We deserve perfection!” Then Kelly flicked the switch and produced a wave that was like a mirage: ruler-straight, lightning fast, and with a tube section that eats surfers. Still, the surfing public was outraged. “This one is TOO perfect!” we yelled. “We are bored to tears by this amount of perfection!” Then American Wave Machines and BSR Cable Park came to the party with their air section and barrels and warbly waves, and we collectively shit our pants with glee. “This one is just the right amount of perfect!” we screamed. “We are not bored nor are we too excited!”
Well, since the Surf Ranch Pro is on, the wave pool that’s just the right amount of perfect teamed up with the Catch Surf team to produce an edit that’s about as far as what’s happening in Lemoore, CA right now as possible.
