Maui is in the midst of an environmental disaster as wildfires have ravaged the Valley Isle. Families have been evacuated and at least six people died. As witnessed by this video posted to the Instagram page HawaiiNewsReport, the devastation to Lahaina has been catastrophic. Which is an absolute tragedy given what a historic town it is.

For now, government entities are recommending donations go to the Hawaii Salvation Army and  the Hawaii Community Foundation Maui Strong Fund. The Maui police are asking for non-perishable donations be dropped off at Maui’s War Memorial Complex Wednesday and Thursday if you’re on island.

A state of emergency has obviously been enacted as thousands have had to flee the fires. Those fires are being stoked by trade winds exacerbated by Hurricane Dora. It’s a terrible set of circumstances hitting Maui all at once.

“We started smelling the smoke, and that’s when we knew we had trouble,” Steve Scott, a Maui resident told ABC News on Wednesday. “It came, and it came quick.”

Non-essential air travel to Maui is being discouraged.
