As of yesterday, the US Open of Surfing has begun. The event, properly titled the World Surf League Lexus US Open of Surfing Presented by Pacifico, runs from August 3 to 11 at the pier in Huntington Beach, California.
Competition began yesterday with the second stop on the 2024 WSL Longboard Tour. A host of the world’s best longboarders will compete until finals day on August 6, including reigning champions Soleil Errico and Kai Sallas. Also among the competitors are Ben Skinner, Alice Lemoigne, Rogelio Jr Esquievel and three-time WSL Longboard Champion Honolua Blomfield.

Immediately after the close of the longboard event, stop number four of the WSL Challenger Series starts on August 7 and runs through August 11. The CS event this year has a particularly stacked field, with 2023 US Open winners Sawyer Lindblad and Eli Hanneman returning to reclaim their titles. Current Challenger Series number ones Isabella Nichols and Ian Gouveia will also make an appearance, looking to qualify for the 2025 Championship Tour. Finally, a host of surfers will be coming straight from the Olympic stage in Teahupo’o, including Kanoa Igarashi, Vahine Fierro, Alan Cleland Jr., Kauli Vaast and Sanoa Dempfle-Olin.
Finally, a number of non-surfing events will also take place during the run of the event. Yesterday already saw Sublime perform a headlining set alongside Jakob Nowell, son of the late Bradley Nowell. Additionally, skateboarding will return to the open with the Lexus X Games Vert Pro, taking place on a massive vert ramp right on the beach. The Vert Pro began yesterday with the women’s Skateboard Vert Next X Jam, and will be followed by the men’s event taking place today at 3:30 p.m. PDT. The Vert Pro will resume on Finals Day weekend, August 10 and 11.
