URBNSURF has endured a challenging 2020 like the rest of the world. As Australia’s first wave pool open to the public, its January 2020 opening was a big deal. Things were quickly put on hold when mud rain turned its pool brown, and then, by March, it was forced into another extended closure in response to COVID-19. On Friday, the park officially opened its doors to the public again and announced improvements to its wave as well as new health and safety protocols around the park.
“In line with the Victorian Government’s gradual easing of Coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions, up to 18 surfers will be permitted on either side of URBNSURF Melbourne’s surfing lagoon, and additional hygiene and safety measures have been implemented to ensure guest and crew safety,” read a press release from URBNSURF. As restrictions ease, they say, surf lessons and spectator visits will soon be brought back to the park as well.
The re-opening announcement comes with two new types of surf sessions for guests: the Cruiser session, a point break-like wave designed for novice and intermediate surfers, and URBNSURF’s Expert sessions. The latter features three variations of a slab-like, barreling wave they call Beast Mode (or Beast Mode Plus when the winds turn offshore).
“We’re thrilled to re-open URBNSURF Melbourne today, and to welcome our loyal members and guests to score perfect waves with us in Tullamarine,” said Andrew Ross, URBNSURF’s Founder and Director. “With school holidays right around the corner, there’s no better place for Melburnians and Victorian visitors to stay active and get stoked with their families and friends.”
