What, exactly, is Drug Aware?

The Inertia

The Drug Aware Margret River Pro may be the most exciting tour stop for the WSL. Many that would normally just watch a few heats or check on the results after the event were absolutely captivated. The Box is a game changer. Both The Box and Main Break bring their own set of lethal characteristics that are equally opposite and completely user-unfriendly. The phenomenal surfing, epic wipeouts, and broken boards piqued the attention of the surfing community. The only question left is about the sponsor itself: Drug Aware. There seemed to be little commentary on it, and if you’re outside of Australia you may have never heard of them.

Since the last jersey has been put away and de Souza left with the cup, there’s no better time to figure out what this Drug Aware stuff is all about. “Being ‘Drug Aware’ means I’m fit and healthy enough to be out and about and enjoy my active lifestyle exploring this beautiful country of ours!” says the website. Health, fitness, and adventure, all wrapped up with some nationalism. Sounds legit. Rather than condemnation, Drug Aware uses their platform as an opportunity to promote cognizance instead of commanding indoctrination.

Discretion regarding drug usage varies from country to country, and it’s obvious that Drug Aware takes a more realistic approach than your typical American anti-drug movement. For instance, under the ecstasy tab, there are clear warnings expressing the dangers regarding purity issues, overdosing, and overheating. They are undoubtedly discouraging usage. Despite this stance, the site still offers suggestions as to how much water one should drink while under the influence, drug testing issues, and even how to acquire clean needles. Critics will say the availability of this information is enabling. For some, it might be. In reality, it’s better to receive information from a reputable source than to hear it from some guy in the locker room or your friend’s roommate’s older sister.

Australia maintains similar policies to the United States in regards to drug prevention and education, but is more progressive in harm reduction measures. The presence of social movements like Drug Aware, which support needle exchanges and ecstasy testing, demonstrate concern for public health over traditional ideology. These movements are indicative of a state that is sympathetic towards addiction. Let’s face it: American policies stemming from the War on Drugs have their crosshairs on the user, not the used.

Surfing was bred in a counter-culture which, at moments, glorified its bad habits. There’s no escaping the past–Drug Aware recognizes this and offers a realistic way to move forward.
