Paddy ‘the Baddy’ Pimblett has enjoyed a relatively meteoric rise to fame when it comes to the fight world. He’s 3-0, as it stands at the time of this writing, and likely to improve on that. A likable fella with a rolling English brogue, Paddy Pimblett seems like the kind of guy who’d punch you in the teeth then buy you a beer and slap you on the back with a laugh.
As a guy who famously puts on up to 50 pounds and then sheds it all right quick, Paddy decided to take a trip up the hill from the Malibu coastline to visit with Laird Hamilton, who famously eats… well, a little differently than most. He also trains a little differently than most, using weights and pools and ice baths and saunas and breathwork and whatnot. Our own Zach Weisberg called Laird’s workouts “torturous” and you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who disagrees.
Paddy, as you’d imagine, is no slouch when it comes to training and dealing with painful situations. He beats up, or gets beaten up, for a living and spends much of his time preparing to beat up or get beaten up. Laird’s XPT workouts, though, appear to have been a little rough on the Englishman, especially the ice baths. Much of Laird’s process relies on a mind-over-matter technique, something that is exceedingly important when it comes to stepping into the Octagon with a person bent on smashing your lips into the back of your head. Paddy knows that, if he wants to continue to win, learning how to strengthen the mind is something that he needs to improve on.
And if he can even get half of whatever Laird’s got going on in his brain that enables him to do the things he does… well, watch out, next competitor.
