The best surfers on earth are dialed into their surfboards. Think of Dane Reynolds, for example. Stab’s series, Stab in the Dark, shows that Dane’s knowledge of what he’s riding is far more nuanced than nearly anyone else’s. Tyler Warren is another one of those people, but Warren comes at surfboards in a different way–they’re functional art. “Whether he’s in the water, in the shaping bay or meticulously producing his unique artwork,” reads the Youtube description of the video above, “Tyler Warren is one who walks to the beat of his own drum.” But whether he’s riding something he made himself or riding something from someone else’s hand, Tyler is riding it well.
He makes boards that aren’t the norm, and he think that might have something to do with the very first board he ever owned, a strange looking channeled twin fin. “Maybe it subconsciously inspired me to make twin fins and fishes and channel bottoms,” he says. But it’s not just twin fins that he surfs–Warren’s incredibly talented on just about anything that’ll slide. Need proof? Stop reading and watch.
