There was a time, a long, long time ago, when foam boards were for learners. They were the rentals, the surfboards used exclusively by would-be surfers who couldn’t quite surf yet. Wavestorms entered the market, picked up the lion’s share of it, and a movement was born. People like Jamie O’Brien started riding foam surfboards at Pipeline. Slowly but surely, foamies became culturally appropriate. Now, as you’ve likely noticed, they’re everywhere.
One of the biggest foam surfboard brands in the world is Catch Surf. They make surfboards strictly for having fun. Yeah, there’s a performance element in there, too — not all foam boards are created equal — but they focus on the “having fun” part of surfing. Tyler Stanaland is one of their most visible team riders, and his quiver is something to be envied… if you’re a connoisseur of foamies, that is. Which, if you’re not, is something you should be. Because more foam equals more fun, especially when conditions are less than ideal.
