When you hear the word Trestles, you tend to think of Lowers, the pinnacle of skatepark-like high-performance waves on the West Coast. You probably don’t think of guys walking the nose on logs unless you wanted to spend the afternoon surfing San Onofre. Just up the beach though, is Uppers, Lower’s slightly less popular kid brother. Surfers still have to do the rock dance getting in and out of the water here. They still ride skateboards and bikes and make 20-minute walks from their cars to the lineup. Only at Uppers, the prize for all that work is hassling with only 50 other surfers for each wave instead of 100 (10 percent of which are likely recognizable professionals surfing 90 percent of the waves).
If you’re Alek Rockrise though, you may just land a once in a blue moon opportunity on the smallest of days here: not a soul in the water.
“It was a surreal morning with literally nobody in sight,” videographer Connor Eck told The Inertia. “So he took his traditional log to the not-so-traditional high-performance wave of Uppers.”
This is what it looks like to nab just a little bit of alone time at one of California’s most popular waves. And Alex makes it look pretty amazing.
