Although Tom Curren is a full-on living legend in surfing, we don’t hear all that much from him anymore. He’s not incredibly interested in the spotlight. He is, though, interested in surfing; in trying new things, feeling new feelings. And that lack of interest in the spotlight, interestingly, is part of what makes him so interesting to the public. Scarcity creates demand, after all, and Tom Curren will always be in demand. Which is why, when Free Scrubber hit the internet, it was news.
Riding on the back of that short film, Curren and Britt Merrick teamed up to design a surfboard. Fittingly, it’s called the Free Scubber. “The board is a re-creation from the magic twin fins Tom remembers Al making him some 40 years ago,” the CI team wrote. “But the Free Scrubber isn’t just a straight copy of that original era’s designs, he wanted to combine the best of that time period with the best of today’s board design attributes.”
Tom likes the feeling of that low rocker and classic vee bottom. He was also a fan of the traditional early eighties winged swallow tail outline, so they smashed them all together into a new shape that’s a twin fin throwback to a few decades ago. Instead of the girth of those older models, though, they refined the rails and foils to give it a bit more pep in its step.
“Tom and Britt both feel this design is the perfect twin fin for surfers generally oriented more toward thrusters,” the team continued. “A spicy and quick surfboard designed to give you all the freedom of a twin while allowing you to go places on the wave you didn’t think possible.”
