The Inertia

Tom Carroll and Luca Elder have this fun little joint where they take out a surfboard, ride it for a while, then talk about riding it. They’ve done a handful of them — the CI Twin Pin and the Free Scrubber, to name a few — and this time, they showed up with the Bobby Quad.

The story behind the Bobby Quad is an interesting one. Initially created to be a small-wave board that still lent itself to Bobby Martinez’s particular style of absolutely ripping, it turned out to be something of a surprise.

“This was made to be a groveler,” Martinez said. “And then it turned into being a really good board in really good waves. I’ve never had that before, ever.”

What a nice surprise, right? He brought it to pumping Rincon one day, and figured he’d give it a shot, just to see what it was like. “It just blew my mind,” he continued. “I realized it was a really good board, even in really good waves.”

The waves that Carroll and Elder tested it in were not, by most people’s standards, “really good waves.” But still, it turned out to be pretty perfect for the day. And that day was a lot more like the average day at most people’s home breaks… so that’s saying something.
