Just under a week since the conclusion of the lululemon Maui Pro, newly minted future U.S. Surf Team members and future Olympians, Caroline Marks and Carissa Moore, are being thrust into the spotlight. Every two years, NBC – the official home of Olympics coverage in the U.S. – clues in on sports that are unfamiliar to mainstream sports fans at home, begins spinning storylines, and promoting American athletes. The run-up to the 2020 Tokyo Games is no different.
Being the first women who will represent the United States in the sport of surfing on the Olympic stage, Moore and Marks’ achievement at the conclusion of the 2019 Championship Tour season is nothing short of historic, to be sure. And during a recent appearance on the Today Show, the pair dished on their enthusiasm around competing for gold and sought to clarify details for Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie about how surf competitions are judged.
“What if you’re on a great wavy day or you’re on a day that isn’t so terrific, how do they, how does it work for you guys?” ponders Kotb.
“You’re working with nature, so it’s an always-changing canvas,” replies four-time world champ, Carissa Moore.
