The Inertia

Most waves have been around since long before surfers even existed. Many of them will still be there long after we’re gone.

As we get caught up in contests, edits, and of course our own pursuits in the water, it’s a fact that can be easy to forget. Tunnel vision can turn surf breaks into just a venue in which to practice our hobby or, for professionals, a literal workplace.

However, one also can’t help but take a step back every once in a while, just to marvel at the vast scale of even the smallest corner of the ocean. In the case of extreme surf videographer Tim Bonython, that corner wasn’t even that small, either.

“Nazare is principally a small fishing village that became world famous for its big waves and the people that ride them,” wrote Bonython in the caption. “This edit is not about the surfers but the beauty in the power of these incredible monster waves. When the ocean pushes out of the Nazare canyon to create the incredible cinematic moments. Edited to fit classical music, this video is (a tribute to) the beauty and the power, shot on one of the biggest swells to hit Nazare this winter season.”
