The Inertia

There’s a reason so many surfers (not least of which, Kelly Slater) have cultivated a special relationship with Fiji – namely, the tiny heart-shaped island of Tavarua. It’s as close to paradise as you can get and no doubt the WSL Championship Tour is collectively bummed Fiji is not on the schedule this year.

And speaking of pro surfers, it’s easy looking in from the outside to think that life on tour is rainbows and unicorns. Not that it isn’t, but constantly competing can be grueling. Like any other job it’s important to disconnect. Recharge. And maybe, just maybe, a draining Fijian pit that ain’t being dissected by an international panel of judges is precisely what the doctor ordered. At least that’s the case for Tia Blanco.

For her latest piece, Balanced, Blanco visited Fiji for the first time and was blown away.

“This trip for me was so special and truly was about finding balance in my life,” she said. “I got to experience Fiji for the first time with my sister and had the pleasure of surfing some amazing waves. I am so happy to share this piece with you.”
