Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, there’s a new social media app in town. Meta just launched Threads, a text-based version of their photo-sharing app Instagram, that’s positioned to be a direct competitor to Twitter.
Threads hit the Apple and Android app stores Wednesday night, and by the next morning Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that 30 million users had already signed up.
The interface is very reminiscent of Twitter, with a feed of text-based posts. Posts are limited to 500 characters (up from Twitter’s 280) and can include links, photos, and videos up to five minutes long. However, the app is very much in its infancy, with some key features still missing.
“Our vision with Threads is to take what Instagram does best and expand that to text, creating a positive and creative space to express your ideas,” reads a press release announcing the launch.
Users can sign up through their Instagram accounts and keep their existing username and password. They are also presented with the option to automatically follow the same accounts they followed on Instagram. New users will have to set up an Instagram account to join.
If you’re the early adopter-type, a social media addict, or simply sick of Twitter’s shenanigans, here’s a roundup of some surfers that are already on the new platform.
