Spearfishing is a fantastic pursuit. Probably because, for most, it’s a pursuit the burns many more calories than fish actually caught that would replenish those lost calories. But it puts you amongst the elements and it could easily be argued that spearfishermen and women see more of the ocean in its natural environment than most people. That’s a good thing. And sometimes, a scary thing.
This spearfishman was diving near Lucinda, Queensland, Australia at the end of May when he shot a fingermark. He lost the catch and dove back down to retrieve it off the bottom. After hitting it with his spear again, a bull shark comes out of nowhere and nearly takes his leg off, luckily only stealing his fin. Yes, hunting with a spear definitely gives you a front-row seat to the ocean world, beautiful or scary.
