Back in 1937, surfing wasn’t exactly popular. It was getting there, though. Tom Blake had just created a way to make boards much lighter (although his version of light was still over a hundred pounds), and fins were still a reasonably new addition. While surfing wasn’t ever huge in television until Gidget came along, the inimitable Walt Disney created what is probably the world’s first animated surf flick.
Goofy’s the only one to paddle out, though. And yes, he’s goofy-footed. In fact, this film is probably where the term came from. Seriously.
