The Inertia

When you’re a surf videographer as prolific as Jimmy Wilson, a lot ends up on the cutting room floor. Recently, Jimmy decided to sweep up that floor and show us what he found.

“I think it makes sense to put out some memorable sessions to the world, so people can enjoy,” he wrote in the description for his latest video, featuring a particularly memorable North Shore session with John John Florence. The day in question was January 5th, 2022, right in the middle of Vans Triple Crown of Surfing waiting period. Wilson writes that it was “one of the best non-barreling sessions of surfing I’ve ever witnessed.”

He goes on to explain that, at the time the video was shot, he thought John John Florence’s production company Parallel Sea was going to use it. In the two years since, the footage has remained unused, so he decided to bring it to the light of day, and we’re grateful he did.

“This footage is in chronological order, no editing aside from cutting out a few waves that weren’t worthy,” explains Wilson. “There were a few times I had to hold my composure after John did a carve, but seriously, inside I was freaking out watching this go down.”

Also, check out the ride at 0:35, where you can spot a rogue bodysurfer emerging from the foam like a vengeful sea ghost.
