It seems once you’ve seen one perspective of a wave you’ve seen them all these days. Even drone footage can feel mundane from time to time because it’s no longer unique, no matter how beautiful the shot.
With that in mind, bringing the world a new perspective to something familiar can be awesome. If you can figure out how to do it. Or what if that new perspective isn’t so new after all?
Enter Dylan Lightfoot at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. Armed with a GoPro MAX 360, Lightfoot and filmmaker Chris Rogers set out to capture the best right point break in the world like we’ve never seen before. Plot twist: we have seen this before. And the nostalgia it induces should have Flaming Hot Cheetos and Mountain Dew flying off the shelves. The duo lucked into some serious Kelly Slater Pro Surfer footage.
“No 360 melon grabs but I am working on that,” Dylan joked with us.
Approximately four minutes into this video Rogers breaks down how they captured (or recreated!) this look at J-Bay, showing off the mount and even giving some pointers on how they avoided shadows from the rig, and more. Now go dig out that old PS2 and order a pizza. It’s flashback time.
