“There are waves in Dubai?” asks every surfer on the planet. No, not the wave pool in Al-Ain, but yes, on the immaculately manicured white sand beaches of Dubai, there are waves. Specifically Sunset Beach. Sitting under the shadow of the towering Burj Al Arab 7-star hotel is last remaining surfing beach in Dubai. The annual local contest, The Sunset Open, brings together this burgeoning surf community in a vibrant two-day display combining art, health, music, and of course surfing (or wave sliding, as the locals call it), bringing awareness of the significance that this location holds–not only as the glue to which binds this family of friends together, but also our small contribution to welcome the global surfing community.
