Griffin Colapinto has been on an absolute tear as of late. With a semifinals showing at his first event as a full-time CT competitor at Snapper, an equal 13th at Bells, the rookie from San Clemente now sits 8th on the Jeep Leaderboard rankings making a solid case for Rookie of the Year. His secret? Maybe it has something to do with an unadulterated froth to surf (see: 1:04 where Conner Coffin pulls up to the parking lot and Griffin’s already got his suit on). Oh yeah, and he’s surfing insane as evidenced by this whole clip.
One thing’s curious, though. Not a single left from Conner or Griffin in the whole edit.
As we learned in our little jaunt to Lemoore, every time the train pulls the foil to make a right, it comes back to make a left. So, why only show half of the waves surfed in a clip?
If we’re being honest the left at Surf Ranch is impressive but not as impressive as the right, which could explain it. It yields an interesting little insight, though. As the Founders’ Cup quickly approaches (this weekend!) allow me to wager that the event will be won not on competitors’ ability to go right, but their ability to grind it out on the left which is trickier and much less forgiving.
