Since the days that he ruled at Pipeline, Gerry Lopez has always had a way of making people stop and watch him surf. It’s not anything he tries to do. To the contrary, it’s that he doesn’t seem to be trying that perhaps makes people want to stop and watch him surf. Whether it’s Pipeline in his heyday, the rive wave on the Deschutes in Bend, Oregon, or even the recently opened Lakeside Surf in Lake Chelan, Washington at the base of the Cascades. A 50-foot wide feature built by CityWave.

Gerry, who of course lives in Bend, recently visited the wave pool in Lake Chelan and looks to have had a ball, as you can see him casually carving turns, above. He’s long professed the fun of river waves, telling The Inertia recently how much joy he gets out of the river surfing community. (“Everybody knows when it’s their turn,” he said.) You can listen to that here.

Gerry even recently designed a board specifically for freshwater, standing waves called the River Boat. As you can see, there isn’t a whole lot of stress in riding a standing wave. Or maybe that’s just the way Gerry makes it look?
