Catalina Island, off the Southern California coast, can still be counted as a wild place. The island was first inhabited by the Tongva or Gabrieliño Native Americans, where they had fresh water, ate plant and sea life, and thrived for some 8,000 years. Unfortunately, in the last two centuries it’s been turned into a very different place. More manicured and groomed. But it’s still the gateway to the vast Pacific Ocean. And wild sea life regularly patrol its shores. Like this giant great white shark, which this fisherman in the video says is in the 18-foot range. That’s one big fish keeping the island wild.
