Have a mind surf of these waves? This rarely filmed phenomenon is created by the massive tidal swings on the Kimberley Coastline of Western Australia, as water moves in and out of an area known as King Sound from the Indian Ocean. The massive amounts of moving water and a bathymetry formed by the continental shelf combine to create incredible wave faces.
Not only are they rarely filmed, they’re apparently rarely surfed. Which it’s easy to see why. All that moving water forms a giant tidal river with holes and hydraulics (in river parlance), and dangerous conditions.
But those faces are so enticing. You can nearly imagine yourself getting towed on to one of those clean faces. At the 2:05 mark, the Jet Ski actually skips down the face, giving context to just how big the waves are.
This region of Western Australia is one of the true natural wonders of the world. In an area known as Talbot Bay Broome, the tide is an actual river, forming rapids known locally as the Horizontal Falls. You can watch drone footage of them, here or below.
