Chris “Thes One” Portugal of the hip-hop group People Under the Stairs, just celebrated a milestone birthday in style. Chris gathered a solid crew of surfers to board the SS Gurahali and set sail around the Maldives for 10 days in search of perfect waves.
The crew was referred to as the 40 oz. Surf Dogz, consisting of Chemistry Surfboards shaper Jason Bennett, Will Smith, Mavericks charger Wyatt Fields, Casey Macker, DJ Alex Boomin and myself. Jason and Will brought an entire arsenal of boards for testing and research, knowing we would be surfing a variety of waves in our search for uncrowded perfection and giving everyone on the boat a chance to try different boards.
It started off in the southern atolls where with pristine 3-4 ft. surf but we left just two days later when our surf guide Nahu got word of a solid swelling filling in toward the northern atolls. We realized we weren’t the only surf charter with this gameplan as soon as we arrived. Multiple crews filled the lineup with close to 80 surfers at some of the more popular breaks. Lucky for us, Nahu knew the atolls better than most and snuck us away from the crowds and into some of the best waves to hit the Maldives all season. This place really is paradise.
