This past year was pretty unique on Maui. You know you can count on plenty of waves when winter rolls around, but in an El Niño year the ante is upped quite a bit. The inspiration for my film project, Third Eyeland, came from the anticipation of an historic El Niño in the Pacific and the opportunity to document what I knew would be a special year on Maui. The film shows the people and waves on Maui season by season, so you can guess that winter would become the bread and butter of the whole process.
