The Inertia

As surfers, we must understand how important it is to find alternative means of making our crafts in order to offset our carbon footprint and ensure the continuity of a healthy planet. The truth is, hazardous materials and harmful manufacturing operations are still practiced today in the shaping industry. And it’s up to us to drastically reduce, if not eliminate these practices.

The board my friends and I created is intended to do just that. The stalks of agave are harvested from deep up the river valley next to Pe’ahi (Jaws) and along the roadsides of Maui. The stalks are dried for three months and eventually are used to make a blank. Once the glue dried, the board still had a ton of work before the shaping can begin. This video documents the entire process, from the harvest to the finished shape.
