The history of the Caribbean nation of Haiti is rife with tumult. Being formed out of the only slave uprising to result in a state ruled by non-whites, the fledgling country became a pariah after its formation. Nations that still held slaves were resistant to establish trade relations, and now Haiti remains the poorest country in Latin America and the Caribbean. Natural disasters including an earthquake in 2010 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016 have compounded the strife in recent years. Yet, through it all a burgeoning surf community has formed – and they’ve got Olympic ambitions.
