The Wedge saw the largest swell it’s received in years over the holiday weekend. Unfortunately, surfers, photographers, and beachgoers were kicked off the beach around 10 a.m. on Saturday and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday thanks to COVID-19-related beach closures. Still, people made the most of the window of opportunity they were given.
The Wedge is incredible to watch anytime it gets big, and a swell like this brings out a lot of heavy talent. After waking up at 4:30 in the morning to make my way to Newport and catch a look, I got to watch guys like Jamie O’Brien, Blair Conklin, skim “slide offs” (no, not step offs) from Brad Domke, Kenny Kuypers, Tyler Thornsley, and a lot more. In all my years of visitng the Wedge on big south swells, this was the biggest I’ve ever seen it with my own two eyes.
