Writer/Surfer

The Inertia

I wish I were born a goofy foot. In the U.S. we call the condition of left-foot-frontedness regular. In Australia, it’s natural. The suggestion is that putting your right foot forward is irregular and unnatural. “Goofy” feels like the redheaded stepchild of stance, when the reality is some of the most stylish folks to ever step on a surfboard led with their right. Gerry Lopez, Joel Tudor, Rob Machado, Ryan Burch, Craig Anderson. Yup, all goofy. Which begs the question, is there something inherent in the cavalier attitude goofies embrace their “irregularity” that makes them more stylish?

Take Parker Coffin, in the video above. Nothing against older brother Conner, but the kid seems to have a certain je ne sais quoi, no? Is it the goofyfoot allure? And do these things only matter when you watch someone surf with the opposite stance as your own? Dunno. Seems like goofies have all the fun.
