The Inertia

It is seriously April already. That’s insane. Another week in the books…13 of the 52 we’ll get to enjoy in 2022, to be precise. In that vein, welcome to the Weekly Wrap, where The Inertia’s Juan Hernandez wraps up some of the best stories from surf and snow on our site each week.

We’re getting dangerously close to the Championship Tour’s midseason cutoff, where 12 men and seven women will be relegated to the Challenger Series, joining a crop of rising talent hoping to qualify themselves. Meanwhile, the Longboard World Tour finally has a schedule — something that caused a lot of bickering in the weeks leading up to its announcement. Three stops — Manly Beach, Huntington Beach, and First Point Malibu — will decide World Champions for 2022.

Speaking of champs, the Academy Awards featured some familiar boardsports athletes with impressive trophy cases. Kelly Slater, Tony Hawk, and Shaun White donned tuxes and made jokes about being called GOATs. Nobody was hurt, offended, or made into a meme as a result of said jokes. But if you want another take on that moment — because you somehow didn’t get enough already — Kelly did appear on The Dan Patrick Show this week to give his play-by-play of The Slap.

“All of us have our moments of good and bad and I think it was one of those moments that didn’t go to plan. I’m sure they’re both really embarrassed and sad about it. I can see both sides,” he told Patrick.

Elsewhere on The Inertia this week, Oscar Langburne and Juan Hernandez chatted about the Australian surfer’s recent feature film Glósóli. In it, Langburne went off on a rant that addresses homophobia in surfing, localism, internet trolls, bullying…all in a little less than a minute. The clip stirred some reactions from all corners of the internet, and Oscar and Juan discussed its reception along with his creative intentions with the film project and more.

And Contributing Writer Steve Andrews reminded us that winter may be gone but plenty of people are still enjoying backcountry skiing and snowboarding right now. “The longer days and warmer nights beckon us to explore peaks much further than the usual jaunt,” he wrote this week while pointing out that the new season also comes with its own set of conditions and challenges newer backcountry enthusiasts should be prepared for.

Look for Juan’s Weekly Wrap each week here at The Inertia.
