The Wedge is alive again. Granted, she won’t be cranking and running full time for a bit but the first annual glimpse of Newport’s mutant backwash wave is always cause for celebration.
What’s the celebration, exactly?
Sand enemas, for one. Wipe-out reels. Surfers hitting the eject button upon takeoff, fully detached from their surfboard and plummeting into the flats like the Ultimate Warrior coming off the top rope. Buckled surfboards. Hollow, hollow waves with a closeout section that slams shut with the conviction of a guillotine.
So yeah, we think this is something to get excited about. Let’s all thank the surf gods for our first Wedge edit of 2019.
