The Inertia

About a million years ago, I had the chance to surf a WaveJet. Remember those? For a few short years, the company made a big push into the surf industry, but it was a bit of a flop. I came away from our day with a few conclusions: objectively, it was super fun. There are many applications where a jet-powered surfboard is useful — lifeguards and people with spinal injuries spring to mind — but the kook factor when riding a jet-powered surfboard is pretty damn high.

Even Garrett McNamara had a go with one at Nazaré, but despite WaveJet’s best efforts, those surfboards aren’t seen in lineups… well, pretty much ever. But I’m telling you, if I didn’t have any kind of self-awareness or an extremely unhealthy obsession with being liked, I’d armlessly paddle into waves on one every now and again.

The Sickos, a gang of people who enjoy pushing all sorts of limits and doing all sorts of strange-ish things, got their hands on one. First, they got their feet in the wax in some flat water, but then they decided they needed to take it somewhere with actual waves. And so they did.
