This is a short piece I put together about the South Florida underground to go along with select shots from my Florida gallery. Most people think of South Florida as one big strip of condos and plastic surgery from West Palm Beach to Miami. You can find that world easily, but you can also easily avoid it. It might not be Indo, but a waterman will be intrigued all year.
Perception can create a reality that challenges even the laws of nature. This is a tangible feeling in South Florida to the initiated. The suffocating expanse of asphalt and stucco has attempted to compress the primitive States of the peninsula to pockets and corridors. And what’s even harder to see than the diminishing palm lines is the vanishing old Florida culture, characterized by an unbridled sense of freedom and DIY ethic of a maritime wild-west. The old salts and garage board-shapers are being replaced by New England brokers and realtors, but as much as the outside world tries to force mouse ears, retirement homes, and super-highways on us in an attempt to civilize this swamp, real authenticity can still be found in the land and the people if you’re willing to explore.
