The meaning of life? I haven’t a fucking clue. I have a difficult enough time planning the next 24 hours. So grasping the overarching or underlying (depending on how you look at it) reason for the series of largely random events is like asking a Montessori student to summarize David Foster Wallace’s undergraduate philosophy thesis, “Fate, Time, and Language.” That being said, in a recent essay on “Discovering Beyond” for The Inertia, Jeff Johnson offered up a little insight that really resonated with me: “It comes down to making good decisions in life. When all is said and done, you’re just standing on a pile of decisions that you’ve made.”
Ultimately the narratives of our lives segment into decisions, big and small, significant and fleeting. And if you ask me, Jeff has made quite a few if not thousands of rather good decisions, at least by our outdoor and action sports community. But above those good decisions is a drive to keep on truckin’ regardless of the circumstance. That is an attribute we all should admire.
