After the horn blew signaling the end of the first round of competition at the J-Bay Corona Open, something awesome happened. It was the Highline Specialty Event, and it was a good idea. J-Bay, as you probably know, ain’t exactly a slow wave. It’s one of those waves where the high line is often the best line. It’s a wave where style is obvious and important–since “style” in surfing is so often just a byproduct of function–especially when someone is riding a twinnie.
So when Conner Coffin, Jordy Smith, Matt Wilkinson, and Sebastian Zietz all pulled out the retro parts of their J-Bay quiver, it was a sight to behold. The winner was chosen by the viewers, and they chose Jordy Smith.
