Opening day of the Haleiwa Challenger is on, with pumping six to 10-foot swell rolling in to the North Shore of Oahu. The women’s round of 48 is currently in the water, with the men’s round of 80 following immediately after to finish up day one.
“The new west swell has filled in overnight as forecasted… the surf is pumping and building through the day with very clean, light offshore winds,” said event director Marty Thomas when the call was made this morning. “It’s going to be a great day of surfing for both the men and women getting their respective opening rounds underway.”
A great day, and a big week for a number of men and women who are on the verge of qualifying for the Championship Tour. There are currently seven spots for the men and two spots for the women yet to be decided. On the men’s side, there are 45 surfers in contention for those seven spots, and on the women’s side, nine surfers have a mathematical shot at making the Championship Tour.
