The Inertia

The greatest surf movie in the universe is a pretty bold claim. But that’s the title of the newest surf movie created by filmmaker Nick Pollet and journalist-artist Vaughan Blakey. The Greatest Surf Movie in the Universe just dropped its trailer and it looks equal parts ridiculous and amazing.

Narrated by Luke Hemsworth, the film includes a mix of life-like figurines and voice overs and appearances from Mick Fanning, Mason Ho, Matt Wilkinson, Jack Freestone, Griffin Colapinto, Craig Anderson, Ronnie Blakey, Joe Turpel, Vaughan Blakey, and Kelly Slater.

The full length film takes place “after the world’s collective knowledge of surfing is completely wiped after a successful vaccination scheme with an unintended consequence, the surf god, ‘Huey’ makes a last-ditch effort to save surfing. Enlisting Mick Fanning (now a yoga teacher in the Himalayas), he plans to put together a team of former surfing champions to create The Greatest Surf Movie In The Universe and save surfing from extinction.”

Ronnie Blakey took to Instagram to share his excitement over the film: “The Greatest Surf Movie In The Universe is almost here! In a couple of weeks two of my favorite people, the big bro @vaughandeadly and his creative comrade @nickpollet will unveil their epic stop motion comedy surf film. When these turbo optimists collaborate the results are always pure gold. They put so much into this one and I can’t wait to see it in full. I’m in awe of the creative output of my big bruddah: the magazines, writing, music, podcasts, films, all of it. Vaughano and I have a similar relationship with surfing….we love everything about it! We have a mad respect for the art, we celebrate the sport, we feel that deep connection to nature…but ultimately we’re in it for the fun and to laugh ’til our faces hurt. This film is the result of two fathers playing with dolls in a garage for almost three years of their adult lives. It’s a ridiculous, outrageous timely reminder not to take things so damn seriously. Congratulations to the entire crew and cast, looking forward to celebrating with you all.”

The Greatest Surf Movie in the Universe is scheduled to premier on April 3 in Torquay, Victoria, Australia.
