Cloudbreak hasn’t quite been its pumping self from last year. However, yesterday, its wide range of high-performance options were on full display as the Fiji Pro finished Round 3, knocked out Round 4, 5 and the Quarterfinals. The notorious reefbreak showed its (baby) teeth as the event came down the stretch biting many seasoned vets, including Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Adriano de Souza. Those escaping an early exit are a young cadre of red-hot surfers, namely Kolohe Andino (defeated Adriano de Souza), Gabriel Medina (defeated John John Florence), Michel Bourez (defeated Kelly Slater) and Nat Young (defeated Mick Fanning).
While this may not be the semis you expected, the event has been surprising. Michel Bourez has proven Slater’s mortality at Cloudbreak and Kolohe Andino has been able to sustain his momentum from Brazil. While it may not be 20 feet and pumping like we’d hoped, watching the world’s best fall to 20-somethings in a part of the tour we thought could be called is one hell of a curveball.
