The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational will not be running on Tuesday, despite high hopes and a promising forecast that prompted a yellow light last week.
The day after Christmas was a gift to both surf fans and Eddie invitees. Forecasts showed a swell in the North Pacific that was poised to bring surf in the 18-20-foot-plus range to areas of the Seven Mile Miracle including Waimea Bay. The organizers behind the Eddie said at the time that it may be enough to run the contest, which last ran in 2016.
As the swell developed, however, it became apparent that it wouldn’t meet the Eddie’s high standards. “The official call is out,” organizers wrote. “The Eddie will NOT run this Tuesday 12/31 due to the swell arrival time and questionable wave size. The waiting continues!”
