The Inertia

You know what’s nice? In the last few years, a whole lot of surfboard shapes that are a little more user-friendly have come out. No longer does everyone’s quiver consist of pencil-thin, heavily rockered boards made for professional surfing in perfect waves. Now, surfboards with a bit more foam in the hips are showing up in lineups. I think that’s because of a few things: first, because it’s become more acceptable.

That guy wearing the scowl with the board that’s not suited to the conditions isn’t every guy anymore. Second, because more and more people are realizing that surfing is simply way more fun if you’re riding a surfboard suited to your skill and to your everyday conditions. One such surfboard is the CI Mid. And when you throw a handful of style-heavy surfing on a shape like that, you’re bound to get a few good takes.

The surfboard you see above, as surfed by Mikey February, Devon Howard, and Cliff Kapono, is a CI Mid Twin. While the OG Mid was a 2+1 setup with a big center fin and two small side bites, the twin is… well, it’s a twin. So, why, you ask, couldn’t a person just pull that center fin out of that 2+1 and have a twin? Simple: because those side bites in that particular setup are way too far forward.

“So, when updating our popular CI Mid to accommodate two fins, we once again worked with the Mid’s co-designer Devon Howard,” the CI folks wrote about the Mid Twin. “After riding multiple R&D revisions with various fin placements — and adding tweaks to both tail rocker and overall dimensions — Devon concluded that ‘A really great board just got even better.'”
