The Margaret River Pro saw some of the better Finals Day conditions of this CT season. So far, that is. Main Break was solid. All the mid-season cut scenarios were wrapping up. And on the men’s side fans were treated to one of the best Finals matchups across the entire tour roster: John John Florence versus Jack Robinson.
The drama of the cut has become the primary storyline of the CT’s stop in West Oz since it was instituted two years ago. But before that not-so-popular turning point in the season schedule was introduced, fans and surfers were always geeked for a glimpse of The Box. Admittedly, most of us hope at least one day during each event window, conditions at the slab will line up just right for organizers to call an audible and run heats there. A call like that turned out to be an insane day during the 2019 Margaret River Pro, for example.
The anticipated scenario didn’t play out this year but The Box did turn on for at least one amazing session while the world’s best were in town. The Colapinto brothers, Jack Robinson, Eli Hanneman, and a handful of other CT athletes made their way over from Main Break and turned in a pretty incredible freesurf session.
