It’s a freak of technology , created by a freak of nature.
Kim Kardashian’s ass, Miley Cyrus’s tits, Donald Trump’s gobbledygook nonsense…many things these days are “breaking the Internet” (although mine still seems to be working). Everyday some C-list celebrity spews some drivel or releases nudes, so what? For the surf world, and hopefully the majority of self-respecting global citizens, these trivial antics mean next to nothing. However, there is the occasional mind-melting breakthrough in the surfing sphere.
Kelly Slater dropped a bomb last Friday when he revealed the first look at his man-made wave. It’s his magnum opus. His baby. His lasting mark on the sport of surfing’s future. And the footage was the closest thing to the surf world’s version of Kim K.’s bare butt doused in lube and champagne. It’s a mesmerizing feat of science, a perfect reeling right-hander with a punchy lip. And it actually barrels! All hail King Kelly!
Once the social media dust subsided, and the video had been viewed over 4 million times, people shared their thoughts. Some pro surfers and surf industry folk had the best (and funniest) reactions. Here’s a few of our favorite:
